4 The structure of the document

In this section I will describe all of the elements of the General DTD, grouping them by type. There is an alternative description of the elements, listed alphabetically, in Appendix C.

The elements are thematically grouped in Table 2, and each of these groups is discussed in the indicated section. Note that the discussion there is intended to provide an overview of the possibilities provided by the group, and it does not necessarily describe all of the functionality available; see the individual element listings for further details.

Remember that the markup of your document is quite distinct from its processing, so that not all elements and attributes will necessarily have a detectable effect on the output (ie, formatted) document you produce. Nonetheless, you should future-proof your document by including as much element and attribute detail as you can.
