• XSL is broken into two main components: XSLT, which is a language for transforming XML documents into other XML documents, and XSL-FO, which is a set of `formatting objects', which is a model for the layout of material on the page. Both are described in the XSL spec. A series of XSL-FO objects can be conveniently described in XML, so one use of XSLT is to transform your XML document into another document conforming to the XSL-FO DTD, which can then be given to a program which interprets XSL-FO for printing.

• XPath is a language for addressing parts of an XML document, designed to be used by both XSLT and XPointer.
