The
Semantic Web
is a proposed set of facilities to add machine-intelligible semantics
to the web (describable as `encoding metadata using XML syntax', but
it's more than that at heart). The main activity within this is
RDF.
Tim Berners-Lee's Scientific American article contains a vivid scenario.
