The cartoon

A remarkable compression of the very complicated Wedemeyer cartoon into the purest of black-and-white 2D elegance. Note also the Dowdy predecessor. Here the author is distinguishing different morphological features of the solar chromosphere - spicules, moss, straws, mottles, Wilson depressions etc., etc., all of which constitute the notorious magnetic carpet spawned by magnetoconvection in the photosphere. The emphasis in this cartoon's description (see the paper for interpreting the labels) is in terms of physical properties and their diagnosis via radiative transfer theory.
