Why are flare γ-ray sources not cospatial with flare hard X-ray
sources (one of RHESSI's big discoveries)?
The explanation given here is in terms of DC electric fields.
Maybe this explains why, although it always gives the Archivist
butterflies in the stomach to think of an MHD model predicting anything
to do with particles!
The paper describes 2D simulations and gives interesting discussions of
the shock behavior, including
dimmings,
detached global waves and so forth.
Certainly, it is a beautiful cartoon, rendered in a color table reminiscent
possibly of Scandinavia.
