Huge magnetic structures in the solar interior may dictate large-scale patterns in the corona, despite the apparently tiny scales of magnetic flux emergence. This cartoon envisions a "giant cell" convection pattern in the interior as the vast omega loop pushes through the tachocline (upper panel, black horizontal line) and neighboring convective cells impart the necessary twist.
