purl.org astronomy domain

purl.org is a facility which provides long-term persistence for URLs, by supporting managed and maintainable URL rewriting. It originated within the library community a decade or so ago, and has had quiet success in various archival communities.

There are several purl domains (that's `domain' in purl terms, not DNS):

http://purl.org/astronomy

This is the top holding domain for astronomical PURLs.

http://purl.org/astronomy/vocab

This is the home of several astronomical thesauri (generally SKOS). These are initially the set of thesauri for the VO Theory data model.

http://purl.org/astronomy/ont

This is the home of some ontologies related to astronomy.

At the risk of stating the obvious:

• When referring to a resource with a PURL, it is important to refer to it with the URL of the PURL, as opposed ot the URL it redirects to, which may in principle change without warning.
• There is no significance to the PURL redirecting to this particular page. It is part of the point of PURLs that the redirection page can be easily reconfigured (it's only unfortunate that the original URL disappears from the browser's address bar, but this can't be fixed without egregious browser hacks).

Each of the resources currently under here has been developed in more or less close association with IVOA projects, but the PURL domain is not intended nor expected to be exclusive to IVOA materials.
