RHESSI Results - the need for a rethink?

John C. Brown

Traditional ideas of flare hard x-ray and gamma-ray sources, and of elctron and ion energy budgets, will be re-examined in the light of results from RHESSI. In particular I will discuss
  1. How well we can now infer thin and thick target flare electron spectra
  2. How the widely used collisional thick target scenario stands up to the results of 1)
  3. How well we now know footpoint areas and footpoint motion and implications for beam models
  4. A RHESSI based study of the Neupert effect and implications for electron energy budgets
