The entire global structure of the corona can participate in disruptions mediated by large-scale waves, or by massive restructurings. This cartoon illustrates how one event might trigger a filament eruption or a solar flare, each imagined to result from an instability in a large current sheet, for example in a CSHKP scenario. Such remote interactions, at that point in time, seemed like a plausible explanation for the broad distribution of SEPs. Note that this still requires an explanation, and indeed our understanding of these behaviors remains quite unclear.
