The entire global structure of the corona can participate in disruptions
mediated by large-scale waves, or by massive restructurings.
This cartoon illustrates how one event might trigger a
filament eruption
or a solar flare, each imagined to result from an instability in a
large current sheet, for example in a CSHKP scenario.
Such remote interactions, at that point in time, seemed like a plausible
explanation for the broad distribution of SEPs.
Note that this still requires an
explanation,
and indeed our understanding of these behaviors remains quite unclear.
