The cartoon

An event-specific cartoon describing the remarkable behavior of the disappearing trans-equatorial loop systems of AR 8210, in May 1998 (SOL1998-05-02T13). The transequatorial fields do not figure substantially in this Archive, but here is a good description. Note that the mechanism here requires multipolar fields, for example via a bald patch. CSHKP thrives on a simple bipole structure.

This is an important cartoon because the transequatorial connection indicates a complex global event. Is the large-scale corona important energetically, or is it merely a gaudy display reacting to drivers in the lower corona?
