Loop brightness in terms of footpoint location. A growing body of knowledge associates the observed properties of coronal loops with what's happening at their footpoints in the denser atmosphere. Here the distinctively colored loops link sunspot regions (U for umbra, P for penumbra) but similar principles might apply without visible spots. One interesting aspect of this realization is that there must be an inherent asymmetry between the two footpoints of a given loop structure.
