The cartoon

This is the actual cartoon of the S of the CSHKP development! It was an early serious look at the flare/CME problem from before any "solar flare myth" had been announced, but after Hale, of course. He had called flares "eruptions" and was thus way ahead in the nomenclature wars of the late 20th century. This, incidentally, was not the earliest cartoon recognizing the current-sheet potential of the solar streamer configuration.

      Later CSHKP entries may not have shown the open field lines prior to the flare, but here it looks like they are there all right. But how do the high-energy particles get out of the plasmoid and onto those open field lines? And why is the shock wave shown only within the plasmoid - not that this is a problem, but again it does not help with SEPs. As one would expect from 1966, much work remained to be done...
