The cartoon

This cartoon is from (possibly) the first paper suggesting that white-light flares resulted from particle bombardment. This association of white-light flares with high-energy particles has become very strong by now, with closer and closer matches in space and in time as observations get better. Note that we're still not so clear about the meaning of "bombardment".

This was therefore a predecessor to the popular "thick target" model, though following Neupert's now-eponymous insight. The cartoon judiciously includes both a reconnection-based scenario, presciently quadrupolar and also a simple loop model (but no open fields in either case). We still don't know which is closer to the truth, if either, or if not both perhaps! But probably not neither.
