The filament eruption in the 3B flare of July 29, 1973 - Onset and magnetic field configuration

The basic "sheared-core magnetic explosion" model, as described
endlessly by fans of magnetic reconnection on large scales.
This is in the main stream of CSHKP consciousness - no new ideas really,
but at least insistence here on the 3-dimensional structure.
Many later cartoons in the genre reverted to 2D.
Others embrace the full dimensionality
of the all-important filament cavity/flux-rope geometry.
This very nice Skylab flare (SOL1973-07-29) was a filament-eruption event,
in a spotless region (the Archivist recalls), a favorite subject of
Helen Dodson-Prince
who is alas not represented in this Archive.
