At a glance, this looks like an early (1970) view of
"interchange reconnection",
and that is what it is.
The authors must not have thought it worth neologizing!
Here it was being used to describe the then-puzzling behavior
of the interplanetary
sector structure.
No doubt, a good idea, possibly first presented here in this nice paper,
which relied upon Nançay coronal radio observations.
