The cartoon

A cartoon based on the event SOL2002-11-09. This paper is a nice example of a multi-wavelength analysis of the persistently obscure relationships between interplanetary particles and flare processes. The cartoon shows how the electron streams from type III bursts can be routed through a shock front, leaving a telltale break in the radio drift rate. Note the multipolar solar magnetic structure and the prior existence of open fields; CME 2 is shown blasting out through a streamer.
