Another of the community's halting steps to advance beyond the 2D mindset
of the CSHKP model.
The observational keys to this cartoon have been the "proper" motions of hard
X-ray footpoints, first noted in the Yohkoh hard X-ray imaging
observations, and now much better seen in RHESSI imaging along with associated
source motions in height.
In this paper the key question is the interpretation of the footpoint motions within
the ribbons, with specific reference to the flare SOL2004-03-30.
Generally the observations of various flares suggest that the motions are
either parallel, or antiparallel, or both, or more chaotic (neither).
