An early development (1968) of cartoon ideas regarding emerging and interacting
magnetic fields.
Note the awesome resemblance to the currently fashionable
"breakout" model, except for
the lack of color and perspective.
Indeed, the real pioneers of large-scale reconnection models (Giovanelli, Sweet,
Piddington et al.) generally allowed for multipolar magnetic structures, and the
heavy overemphasis on CSHKP that later transpired does seem like a backwards step.
