The cartoon

An early development (1968) of cartoon ideas regarding emerging and interacting magnetic fields. Note the awesome resemblance to the currently fashionable "breakout" model, except for the lack of color and perspective. Indeed, the real pioneers of large-scale reconnection models (Giovanelli, Sweet, Piddington et al.) generally allowed for multipolar magnetic structures, and the heavy overemphasis on CSHKP that later transpired does seem like a backwards step.
