The cartoon

A cartoon inspired by SOL2002-07-23, in which RHESSI imaging observations revealed different image morphologies for the hard X-ray and γ-ray sources. The appeal to neutrons is quite important here, because we have only limited information about their presence in solar flares, but every expectation that they play an important role in the all-important non-thermal development. The suggestion is that these come from trapped protons, whose mirror points provide enough collisionality for secondary production. The neutrons themselves are then detached from the field and can enter the photosphere freely.
