Key cartoon from a nice paper offering an overview of magnetic conditions associated with microflares, using Hinode magnetic and X-ray observations. Here "MMF" is a "Moving Magnetic Feature", perhaps related to the sea-serpent analog of a partially submerged flux tube. Several morphological types seem to underpin the microflaring activity.
