An important cartoon, because it illustrates an interesting deviation from the CSHKP standard. A cusp forms without the benefit of a full eruption, usually the inspiration for this picture. Moreover ribbons form, suggesting that a failed eruption with its characteristic kink can support arcade development despite the likely deviation from the antiparallel reconnection geometry usually assumed. The flare motivating this was SOL2012-10-20.
