The cartoon

(click on the image for a larger version)

A cartoon invoking large-scale waves in the Alfvén mode as a source of energy transport for a flare, as an explanation for the theoretical problems involved with return current and beam dynamics. This follows an earlier work by Emslie & Sturrock (1982), who alas did not deign to draw a cartoon.

Note also the similarity with the Uchida-Shibata cartoon, differing only slightly in having the flow of Alfvénic Poynting flux going in the opposite direction.
