The cartoon

A melding of two cartoon streams here, courtesy of Vahé Petrosian: Near the Sun we see the CSHKP flare, but embellished by bubbles signifying the presence of turbulence resulting from the magnetic reconnection. This leads to the standard shock front, driven by the accompanying CME, which accelerates particles that can impinge eventually upon us at Earth. Unusually this cartoon has not actually appeared in a published paper, but the link above points to one of the author's papers that contains some of the relevant physics.
