The cartoon

Alphabetically and temporally, the first of the CSHKP entries (which form about 20% of the whole Archive here). This cartoon comes from a memorable 1963 AAS-NASA symposium volume, edited by W. N. Hess. The volume contains any number of wonderful cartoons, almost at the modern level, by other luminaries such as Gold, Petschek, Piddington, Sweet, Sturrock, etc... well worth a look. Some of these are in this Archive, of course. Carmichael himself was a Canadian cosmic-ray physicist, not a theorist apparently.

Note the irregular loop tops - is this a premonition of turbulence in the solar wind? Also note the correct senses of the arrows in the "solenoid" region; this structure really is a flux rope, perhaps like one of the two shown in the earlier Gold-Hoyle cartoon.
