PPAN has requested further feedback. The UKSP Council strongly encourages you to respond to the questionnaire. Sarah Mathews has added the statement below clarifying the format of the NUAP presentation, "Initial priorities are given within the presentation to PPAN. Science questions highlighted in green in this presentation have at this stage been identified as particularly high priority and facilities are listed in priority order within each timeframe. Those current facilities which are underlined continue to be important into the next timeframe. Please do read the scope of each of these questions within the accompanying report, as the bullets in the presentation does not reflect their entire breadth." UKSP Council -------------- From: Rosemary.Young@stfc.ac.uk Dear All, We emailed you after the presentation to PPAN on 28th September 2009 with a link to the NUAP presentation which was given, see: http://www.scitech.ac.uk/resources/pdf/NUAPtoPPAN280909.pdf PPAN has requested we obtain further feedback from you on a number of issues which we need to take account in our next version of the strategy document. This will be presented at the end of November as input into the prioritization exercise which will be completed by the end of the year. In order for us to do this in a timely fashion we set a deadline of the end of the day on 4th November 2009 to respond to the questionnaire on http://www.scitech.ac.uk/forms/nuapquestnew.aspx Thanks for your assistance with these issues, Best regards Michele Dougherty and NUAP ************************************ From: Iain Hannah The UKSP website will be unavailable from 16:30 on Friday 16/10/2009 to around lunchtime on Monday 19/10/2009 due to building work. We are sorry for any inconvenience that this causes. ************************************ From: Melanie.Illsley@stfc.ac.uk RCUK NATIONAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING WEEK AWARDS SCHEME 2010 CLOSING DATE 5pm MONDAY 2 November 2009 Are you a Researcher or PhD student? Looking to give public engagement a try for the first time? Looking for funds to support your public engagement activities during National Science & Engineering Week 2010? If you are funded by one of the seven Research Councils, then funds of up to ?2,000 are available per project to those wishing to engage public and schools audiences with issues relating to science and engineering. This is your opportunity to develop your communication and public engagement skills on a small scale. Application forms and guidelines for the scheme are available online at: www.rcuk.ac.uk/scienceweek or by emailing Katie.Lambert@rcuk.ac.uk Best Wishes Cheryl ********************************************************************* * * * Conferences, Workshops, Meetings * * * ********************************************************************* From: Mihalis Mathioudakis RAS Discussion Meeting on Alfven waves - 1st Announcement Alfven Waves: From Predictions to Evidence January 8 2010 (RAS Lecture Theatre, Burlington House) Additional information will be distributed in a follow up newsletter. Priest" Royal Astronomical Society Specialist Discussion Meeting Geological Society Lecture Theatre, Burlington Place, Piccadilly 13 November 2009 ABSTRACT DEADLINE EXTENDED TILL FRIDAY 23 OCTOBER Aim of the Meeting: Celebrating the career of Prof E.R. Priest, this meeting will focus on our understanding of solar magnetic fields, through observations, theory and modelling. Speakers will address the present state of knowledge of topics such as magnetic reconnection, large-scale magnetic field structure, flux emergence, with emphasis on Prof. Priest's contributions. Future directions required to further our understanding of solar magnetic fields and the role of magnetic fields throughout the universe will also be discussed. More information on the meeting can be found at: http://www-solar.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/~ineke/RAS09/ras09.html Note that attendance is free for RAS members and 15 pounds for non-members (5 pounds for students - but they can join the RAS for 1 pound!). To submit an abstract for an oral or poster contribution to this meeting, please send the following information to Ineke De Moortel (ineke@mcs.st-and.ac.uk). **Please include 'abstract RAS09' in the subject of your email.** ######################################################################## Name: Institution: Email: Preference: oral or poster? Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma physics process that plays a key role in many solar phenomena; not only solar flares and CMEs, but also in coronal heating, driving the solar wind and in magnetic field generation through dynamo action. It is also a process that is central to the magnetospheres of planets, the heliosphere and other stellarspheres, as well as playing a major part in many astrophysical objects, such as accretion discs, stellar coronae, etc. The theory of Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) has been applied successfully to many aspects of magnetic reconnection and the basics of MHD will be covered in this course. Many other topics will also be covered including 2D and 3D MHD reconnection, kinetic aspects of reconnection, as well as applications of reconnection to coronal heating, flares, CMEs and the magnetosphere. This school is specifically aimed at PhD students and postdoctoral researchers who are part of the SOLAIRE network, but it is also open to other early-stage and experienced researchers outwith the network. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide support for students for attending the School. The number of participants will be limited to about 30. Further details about the workshop can be found here: http://www-solar.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/~sws10/ Deadlines: Registration deadline - 11 December 2009 Accommodation deadline - 30 November 2009 On line registration for the workshop is available here: http://www-solar.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/~sws10/registration.php -- Dr Duncan H Mackay Mathematical Institute, University of St. Andrews, St. Andrews, Fife, KY16 9SS, Scotland.
