The nuggets are intended to give a brief overview of research highlights and the use of EIS data. The inaugural nugget looks at the newly created EIS flare catalogue. The catalogue allows users to easily search, view and download EIS observations within a time range of 8 hours before and after the flare starts. Corresponding XRT and SOT data are also available as is a movie demonstrating the easy use of the catalogue. http://msslxr.mssl.ucl.ac.uk:8080/SolarB/eisnuggets.jsp Next month's nugget is entitled "The Weird and Wonderful World of Widths". Information concerning this event can be found on the web at: http://www.cospar-assembly.org/ and http://www.cospar2010.org/index.html ABSTRACTS DUE DATE: February 19, 2010 at the COSPAR website http://www.cospar-assembly.org/ The Scientific Organizers, Alexander Warmuth and Ludwig Klein Event description: In solar eruptive events, a large amount of stored magnetic energy is converted to thermal energy of hot plasmas and to kinetic energy of ejected matter and energetic particles. A significant fraction of the energy released is contained in nonthermal electrons and ions, which implies a pressing need to identify and understand the responsible energy release and particle acceleration processes. The most direct signatures of energetic particles at the Sun are observed in the gamma-ray, hard X-ray and radio regimes. These observations are complemented by imaging and spectroscopic data in the soft X-ray, (extreme) ultraviolet, and visual ranges, as well as by in-situ observations of solar energetic particles. A theoretical understanding of the physics of solar eruptions can only be achieved by considering all these different observational constraints. Therefore, the event will have an emphasis on complementary multiwavelength observations of eruptive events. Some of the topics to be discussed are constraints on particle acceleration from hard X-ray, gamma-ray and radio observations, particle transport models, spectroscopic information on flare plasma heating, new insights into CMEs from STEREO, and in-situ observations of solar energetic particles. A special session will be dedicated to the respective roles of energy release and particle acceleration occuring on large and small spatial scales, respectively. This event is sponsored by the German Aerospace Center DLR. The symposium topics will focus on recent observational, theoretical and experimental efforts in understanding the basic plasma processes in the Universe, with broad synergies with many areas of astrophysics, including: - the origin and dynamics of magnetic fields in astrophysical systems (the dynamo problem); - the origin of x-ray emitting coronas and the role of magnetic reconnection, acceleration of charged particles and cosmic rays; - winds and jets from protostars, highly evolved stars and active galactic nuclei; - plasma radiation processes; - turbulence of the magnetized plasma in astrophysical objects, in the interstellar and intergalactic media and the solar wind; - quantum plasmas under extreme conditions in planetary interiors and in exotic stars; - other key problems in modern plasma astrophysics. The conference venue is the Naxos Beach Resort in Giardini Naxos, where a block of rooms has been reserved at special rates for the IAU partecipants (for direct reservation please use the Hotel Booking form at the http://plasma.oact.inaf.it/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=54&Itemid=58) REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN AT THE CONFERENCE WEB SITE: http://plasma.oact.inaf.it/ Important dates: Early Registration 31 March 2010 Financial Support request 31 March 2010 Accomodation at Naxos Beach 30 April 2010 Abstract 1 June 2010 Late Registration by 25 August 2010 The scientific programme is available at the conference website. Looking forward to meeting you in Giardini ! Alfio Bonanno on behalf of the SOC & L ********************************************** From: Nic Brummell Second Announcement of IAU Symposium 271: ===================================== Astrophysical Dynamics: From Stars to Galaxies ===================================== We would like to draw your attention again to International Astronomical Union (IAU) Symposium 271 on ''Astrophysical Dynamics: From Stars to Galaxies'' to be held at the Grand Hotel Aston, Nice, France, June 21-25, 2010. Full registration, abstract submission, and travel grant applications are NOW OPEN at http://irfu.cea.fr/Projets/IAUSymp271 (see below) The purpose of IAU symposium 271 is to improve our understanding of nonlinear dynamical processes in astrophysical systems by promoting interactions, discussions and collaborations among researchers in diverse but complementary disciplines. Particular attention will be given to those processes with a universal character, ubiquitously present in a great variety of astronomical objects, from stars like our Sun to galaxies. Examples include turbulence, hydromagnetic dynamo action, fluid and magnetic instabilities, and highly nonlinear coupling across a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. Today, understanding the behaviour and evolution of such systems requires accurate, high resolution, multi-wavelength astronomical observations coupled with detailed theoretical modeling and analysis. In particular, high-performance numerical simulations have become an essential and revealing tool for assessing the subtle and often surprising behavior of highly nonlinear systems. Thus, this symposium will provide a unique opportunity for researchers to share their expertise and perspectives on the common nonlinear dynamical processes that underlie complex astrophysical phenomena. This conference will also be a fitting occasion to celebrate the long and illustrious career of Professor Juri Toomre and his upcoming 70th birthday. We will remember Juri's many successes during the conference and celebrate with a banquet in his honor. (Conference co-sponsored by the French CNRS and CEA, ESF-Astrosim, Observatory of Cote d'Azur, Conseil G?n?ral Alpes-Maritimes and the European Research Council through ERC grant STARS2) Overview of Major Topics: ==================== - The Sun and stars - Galaxies - Astrophysical turbulence - Cosmic magnetism - High performance numerical simulation in astrophysics - Nonlinear dynamics - Stellar observational constraints: Helio- and asteroseismology, magnetism, rotation and abundances - Galatic observational constraints: dynamics, magnetism and abundances Confirmed Invited Speakers: ====================== A.
