Registering under GNU/Linux
The unfortunate concequence of NTL's Microsoft-and-Apple-only support
is that their registration process is obfuscated. The following
procedure will allow you to register without either Windows or
Mac. However, you may find it simpler either to use the Windows/Mac
install software provided, or to use someone else's machine to
register.
- Send off for official CDROM. This step is needed for the serial
and PIN number, both only available on the CDROM packaging.
- Configure your favorite PPP package to:
- dial 0800 519 0150
- connect using the username "p1autoreg" with the
password "6661066". You can either login as part of
the dialing script, or authenticate via PAP.
- Either use static DNS servers (194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100)
or obtain them automatically through PPP.
- setup a default route to your new IP address, or ask pppd to do this for you.
If you want a ready-made solution install pppd and
chat on your computer, copy the following files: /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0, /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 and
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets. Then, as root, do
ifup ppp0 to start the connection and ifdown ppp0
to take the connection down.
These scripts worked for a RedHat 6.2 machine. They may work with
other distros, YMMV.
- The connection doesn't connect to the Internet. So, to test the
link is up, try "ping autoreg.autoregister.net" or
"ping 62.253.162.131".
- Once the connection is estabilished, fire up netscape and point
it at http://autoreg.autoregister.net/
- Follow the instructions on the web pages. I had problems with the
pages which I suspect were due to session IDs timing out. Try using
the browsers Back button and keep trying: it does eventually work.
