by Per Anders Hansson

A REVISED and EXPANDED THIRD EDITION of this DETAILED and PERCEPTIVE ACCOUNT of the APPROACH, RESEARCH and RESULTS from EXTENSIVE RUSSIAN EXPERIENCE with LONG-STAY COSMONAUTS in MICROGRAVITY in EARTH ORBIT.

HOW to be PREPARED for ALL KNOWN HAZARDS and SOME UNKNOWN ONES, TOO!

This volume provides the first detailed account of Russian Space Biomedicine by one of the few Western scientists who fully understands Russian approaches and methods. Their concepts and research have always involved a heavily biophysical rather than a simple medical approach and Dr Hansson has made ten invited visits to Russian space biomedical research centres since 1986 to discuss detailed research plans with the Russians and study their results.

The report covers a wide range of topics - the Russian approach to biophysics in medicine; emotional and psychological support for long stay cosmonauts; biomedical experiments on the Salyut space stations and the Kosmos 1887 biosatellite; general medical support for cosmonauts; cosmonaut feeding and modifications of nutritional requirements; free radicals and a general defence to threats in long-stay missions; space radiation and how to minimise its effects; closed ecological systems under development for manned Mars expeditions; and current trends and future directions for Russian space biomedicine. Dr Hansson believes many Western companies will find the sections on free radicals and cosmonaut nutrition particularly interesting. The report provides Western research groups with a sound and user-friendly introduction to Russian space biomedicine. It will induce a new way of looking at many areas currently under research worldwide and provide new insights which could have very wide applications.
