Research Interests

I am currently researching ferrofluids (magnetic fluids, a bit like liquid iron filings) with the aim of using them to simulate waves in a magnetised plasma.
Experiments have been carried out using ferrofluid to produce and manipulate surface waves. It has been found that if a surface wave is excited beyond a certain critical amplitude it will 'jet' dramatically. Click on the images below to see this happening:

The time between frames is 17ms (ie 60Hz), the frequency of the fluid motion is 4.4Hz and the diameter of the container is approx 9cm.
