My name is Alexander Russell. I am an 1851 Research Fellow in the Astronomy & Astrophysics Group of the University of Glasgow.

My research centres on understanding our Sun. In particular, I want to know how energy moves around the Sun's atmosphere and the role played by magnetic waves. Knowing more about this could help us better understand solar flares and protect ourselves from space weather. I'm also interested in Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere (a region of space inside the `bubble' of Earth's magnetic field). I believe that it's important to study both the Sun and our immediate space environment because there are many similarities that help us to learn more.

I also arrange seminars at Glasgow and do some teaching and science outreach.
