Travel & Maps

Glasgow Map
Glasgow relative to the rest of the UK/Europe.

Detailed information is given below but there is also travel information on the University of Glasgow webpage.

All of the meeting sessions will be in the main building of the University of Glasgow, the Gilbert Scott building, University Avenue, Glasgow, G12 8QQ. page. It is a difficult building to miss. There is a detailed map in Delegate Info and the easiest entrance is the Main Gate on University Avenue or at Lord Kelvin's statue at Kelvin Way.

The meeting reception will be in Glasgow City Chambers in the city centre and the meeting dinner/ceilidh in the Kelvingrove art galleries and museum next to the university.

Below is a google map showing some of the nearest travel options for air, rail, bus and subway. Zoom into the Sun (NAM2010) to see the options closer to the University of Glasgow.

Getting to Glasgow

Air

There are 2 Glasgow airports:

Glasgow International (GLA, 8 miles) which has flights to the UK, Europe, North Africa and North America with main (BA, BMI, KLM etc), and low cost (easyjet etc) airlines. To get to the city centre or University, taxis and buses are available from just outside the airport. Taxis to the university are about £25. There is a fast direct 24hr bus to the city centre/Buchanan Bus station (glasgowFlyer/Arriva 500). There is also a local bus to Buchanan Bus station (First Glasgow 747) which has several stops in the West End, along Dumbarton Road and Sauchiehall Street, to the south of Campus.

Glasgow Prestwick International Airport (PIK, 30 miles), served mostly by low cost airline Ryan Air. There is a train station (Prestwick) at this airport which takes you to Glasgow Central Station (journey time about 45mins). Trains have a 30min frequency during the week, hourly on Sundays, though the last train often leaves before the flights arrive. A single is a £7, but you can get this half price if you show you have a flight to/from Prestwick. A bus service to the city centre/Buchanan Bus station runs for early morning and late night flights outwith the times of trains operating.

Train

There are 2 main Glasgow train stations:

Glasgow Central Station -Trains to/from the south (England & Wales). The London Euston to Glasgow train (and other West Coast line services) is with Virgin trains and takes 4 to 5 hours. There are direct services to Glasgow Central on the East Coast line as well with some of the East Coast trains continuing on from Edinburgh. Scotrail's overnight sleeper from London Euston also arrives at Central Station.

Glasgow Queen St Station - Trains to/from the North and East of Scotland on ScotRail (including the frequent, up to every 15min, Glasgow-Edinburgh train, 50min journey).

Bus

The main bus station in Glasgow is the Buchanan Bus station in the city centre. It has both long distance (national express, megabus and citylink), local (first glasgow) and airport buses (see info above, under air) and is close to the other transport links (Buchanan Subway station, Queen St train station).

Getting about Glasgow

Subway

The easiest way to get between the University/West End and the city centre is using the Subway (the third oldest underground system in the world). It is very simple to use as it is just a single circular route with one line going clockwise (outer circle to city from University) and the other anti-clockwise (inner circle from city to University). In the city centre there are stops convenient for the main train stations (Buchanan St stop for Queen St train station and St. Enoch's or Buchanan St for Central Station) and Buchanan Bus station (Buchanan St stop). Hillhead is the closest stop to the University. Note that the subway stops at 18:00 on a Sunday, but runs till 23:30 the rest of the week.

Bus

There are a variety of buses throughout the city, mostly run by First Glasgow. The 44/44A stops outside the university main gate. A few of these buses run 24hrs and provide a way to get back to the West End after the subway closes.

Taxi

There are many hackney taxis (for instance toa glasgow) and costs about £5-10 from city centre to University depending on time day and traffic. Get the taxi to the "Main Gate" as this is the entrance for the main building where NAM2010 is located.

Train

There is a local train service run by ScotRail from low level Queen St and Central but the closest station to the University is Partick, where there is a subway station anyway. For some of the hotels near Kelvingrove park the Exhibition Centre station is closer than Partick.

Car

Parking is for permit holders only on the main campus so visitors would have to pay for parking on the street. This parking close to the university is often very busy and only allows a maximum of 4 hour stay during Monday to Friday, 9:00-17:00.

Car Rental: There are no car hire locations convenient for the university. Either get the car at the airport (Glasgow or Prestwick) or the Enterprise (40 Oswald St, G1 4PL) next to Central station in the city centre
