A cartoon showing refinements of a standard CSHKP flare
MHD simulation in 2D.
The objective here was to study
QPP, or quasi-periodic
pulsations.
These occur in many forms in the solar
corona.
The cartoon here is exceptional both because it is such a late entry
in the simulation work (why still 2D as late as 2016?) and because
it imagines and or anticipates some detailed features never seen
observationally.
It features not just one, but multipletermination shocks, for
example.
This shows the power of a simulation to predict something, and the power
of a cartoon to make it seem intuitive - at least in some
imaginary 2D space!
