The cartoon

How primitive this 1965 cartoon looks, and yet how relevant the issues it raises! First a dictionary:

   "Permanent coronal condensation" = "active-region loops";
   "Sporadic coronal condensation" = "post-flareloops";
   "Corpuscles" = "fast particles"

      The paper itself, one of a series, predated the Neupert effect in speculating that the over-dense coronal structures might be supplied from the footpoints, despite the confusing word "condensation" that might have suggested a pinch. Likewise the identification of the thermal instability leading to coronal rain is right there in the cartoon. In addition the idea that particles could store energy invisibly and be involved in flare energetics anticipates the Elliott cartoon.
