An extremely influential cartoon describing the 3D structure of the
chromosphere, a major step away from rigorously layered semi-empirical
atmospheric models.
This may not have been the first cartoon to show this, but it is well done
and well cited.
Many much more complicated versions have followed; the Archivist's choice
for the most elaborate would be the
Wedemeyer opus.
Flares and/or CMEs?
They are rooted in this thicket, so its physics
for example
must be a part of our understanding.
