The cartoon

Shift gears briefly - this is illustrating accretion onto TW Hydrae, not the Sun. But similar physics and similar spectroscopic diagnostics also occur in solar failed eruptions, or in other situations see mass flowing through coronal magnetic channels and impacting the chromosphere. The data come from the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating and sometimes we really wish we had comparable X-ray spectroscopy for the Sun. The authors attribute this rather florid cartoon to A. Szentgyorgyi.
